Meaning disputed
From Hebrew Miryam, whose original meaning is uncertain ('beloved' and 'bitter' are both proposed); some Arabic lexicographers explained it as 'a devout woman'. She is the only woman named in the Quran, and Surah 19 bears her name.
The word is real, but sources or popular claims disagree about the name. Each reading is shown with its source.
