How we check meanings
Naam makes one promise: every meaning comes with the dictionary it is taken from, and when there is no source we say so plainly.
Status labels
- Classical source identified (draft) Our editors matched the name to an entry in the classical dictionary cited below. No named reviewer has checked it against the printed page yet.
- Verified by a named reviewer A named reviewer has checked this entry against the printed dictionary page.
- Meaning disputed The word is real, but sources or popular claims disagree about the name. Each reading is shown with its source.
- No classical source found A popular name, but we found no entry for it in Lane, Steingass or Platts, so we give no meaning.
How an entry is made
- The name’s Urdu spelling, its spelling in the language it comes from (Arabic with vowel marks), and for Arabic names the root.
- A meaning in our own words, from the sense the dictionary gives: Lane’s Arabic–English Lexicon for Arabic, Steingass for Persian (and Turkish words used in Persian), Platts for Urdu and Hindi-origin words.
- A reviewer checks the entry against the scanned page, adds the volume and page, and signs it off under their own name.
Where we are today
Naam is new. All 920 entries on the site are first drafts. They were prepared with the help of an AI model from the known entries of these dictionaries and have not yet been checked against the printed pages. That is why every name shows “Awaiting scholar review”. A label changes only when a named reviewer has checked the entry. Entries verified by a named reviewer so far: 0. Until then, a name with a dictionary entry is labelled “Classical source identified (draft)”.
What we don’t do
- No lucky numbers, stones, colours or days. Islam does not tie a child’s fortune to the letters of a name.
- No copying of other name sites’ meanings, lists or wording.
- No guessed meanings. A name without a source is labelled “No classical source found”.
Corrections
If a meaning, spelling or pronunciation looks wrong, write to hello@danixsoft.com with the name’s page. See also the sources.
